Athlete Interview – Brandi Nuse
Apr 19th
To kick off our very first installment of our athlete interviews we stayed close to home. Brandi Nuse is a member and trainer at CrossFit Hershey. CF Hershey is owned and run by our very own Tim Steel. Brandi has picked up much of the responsibilities of training since we keep Tim so busy here. Brandi is a wife and mother (as you will here from our interview) who does a great job of balancing and intertwining those roles and her roles of athlete and trainer. She has a real passion for “lifting heavy things” as she calls it, and is excited to share that with anyone she can. Some of her favorite things to do are ball slams and sledge swings. Brandi also is an excellent cook and does a great job of mixing the “paleo” life style into this by creating dishes you would never even know were paleo. In fact after listening to her interview make sure you check out her fantastic dessert recipe! Also there are a few closing comments from Brandi that she thought of after she was done.

Battle of the Battling Ropes
Jul 22nd
Battling ropes have made a huge appearance back into mainstream strength and conditioning workouts thanks to gentleman like John Brookfield and Anthony Dilugio. John Brookfield, also known as Mr. Hands due to his incredible grip strength, generally is seen as the modern “father” of battling ropes and his “Wave System” is probably the most widely used and duplicated out there. While these gentlemen have certainly brought ropes back into the mainstream, strongmen and longshoremen have long known the benefits of working with heavy rope.
Ropes provide a very unique cardio and a functional strength workout. It is low impact, can be done nearly anywhere and will seriously work your entire body. Due to the rising popularity of ropes I field a lot of questions on the type of rope, the thickness of rope and the length of the rope to use.
Rope Length
The standard length for battling ropes is 50 feet. A 50′ rope wrapped around a post or anchored to something solid provides an effective working length of approximately 25 feet per hand. While advanced users may want a rope as long as 100′ and beginners may want something shorter. When being used in classes where you have two people using the same rope, in other words one person at each end, you may want to consider purchasing 30′ or 40′ ropes which will again give you a similar experience as using the 50′ doubled over. If you want to shorten a 50′ rope it is very easy to do by simply tying a knot in the center of the rope to shorten its length. By doing this you can the rope can be used by anyone from kids to advanced users.
Rope Thickness
For most people and most uses the 1.5″ thick rope provides the best option. This size rope presents the most versatility and can be used by nearly anyone. The grip of even trained athletes will be challenged at this thickness but beginners can still use it as well. We highly recommend 1.5″ thick ropes and they are by far the most popular size. Of course if you are looking to really push your grip strength or your goals are strongman like strength then we would suggest going up to a 2″ thick rope. This size rope is not for the average user, but it will make you strong if you can tame it!
Rope Type
Type of rope is probably the most challenging question. It used to be that a rope was a rope was a rope, but today their are many options available and it can be confusing. The three main options are nylon, poly, and manila. I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each.
8 Strand Poly – Of all the options poly is the best bet. Our poly ropes have a nice smooth finish and are black in color. The poly ropes have the best life span and are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. Poly rope does not absorb moisture and it floats. Use it at the beach, in the pool, in the rain, it doesn’t matter. Mold and mildew resistant this rope will never let you down and never stink up your garage. Price wise poly rope is the most expensive rope.
Manila - Manila rope is what most people think of when they think rope. As the least expensive option of the ropes, manila is often the choice selected. It is the perfect rope for outdoor use as they are rugged ropes. Manila is a natural fiber rope and will have a certain amount of “shedding” and a break in period. These brown ropes may feel “greasy” or slick when you first receive them, this is due to absorbing moisture and the natural moisture in the fibers. To “cure” the rope we recommend allowing it dry in the sun and then taking a dry cloth and vigorously rubbing it over the rope. Doing this with the cloth will help to remove many of the loose fibers from the rope preventing a mess later on. Using chalk on the rope can also help during the break in period since the chalk will help absorb moisture also. While you can leave this rope outside it will rot over time if allowed to stay wet. Treat the rope well and it will last you a lifetime.
3 Strand Nylon - For many woman or gyms that cater specifically to a large female population the Nylon rope is an excellent choice. Middle of the road when it comes to pricing this smooth silky rope works well for people who prefer to be strong without sacrificing their hands to the cause. While some people find callouses and torn open hands sexy, (yes CrossFitters we know who you are) most woman and some men would still prefer to avoid tearing up their hands during and this rope is a great economical solution. One possible perceived draw back of nylon rope is that it is white and can begin to look grungy after extended use.
Conclusion
Get a rope! Any rope will do, but our best recommendation is an 8 Strand Poly rope that is 1.5″ thick. I hope this helps you in your quest to a stronger and better life. If you would like to see our full line of ropes please visit our Battling Ropes page. Now go Play with a Purpose!
CFF Weighted Pull Sled

I am super excited to announce that our new weighted pull sleds are here! These bad boys are made right here in Lancaster County, and at only $109.95 they are one of the best values on the market, especially for a US made product! This project was a bit of a pet project for me so I hope you guys really like these sleds, my job could be on the line. I had a chance to take one down to Vision Fitness of PA and the owner, Niko Hulslander, put it through a finishing GPP workout after his speed bench day. Here is the first part of the videos I shot while visiting him.
I am editing the rest of them and will be releasing them as fast as I can. I hope to have it down there at Niko’s place again this weekend for the Strongman Bootcamp. Legend 4-Way Utility Bench Review
May 27th
Bear with me here, this is my first review and I’m still pretty excited from receiving this today!
I finally made the switch to a rack a few weeks ago but could not decide on a bench to go with it. Looked at several and read several posts and reviews here but nothing seemed to really satisfy me. I decided I was just going to have to look at a higher price bracket and ran across the Legend 4way utility bench. Decided I had save a lot of $$ buying most all of my other equipment on CL so I could justify the splurge on this piece, not to mention the fact that the bench is really a foundation piece and I didn’t want to skimp.
Legend is only about an hour drive from here but at the time I placed my order I did not realize I could buy direct from them so ordered from another company and then it was dropped shipped to me. Any future Legend purchase however I plan to order direct and see if I can pick it up at the factory hopefully saving on the freight bill.
I ended up meeting the truck about a half mile from my house to save him the headache of trying to navigate our neighborhood.
It was sent fully assembled and definitely no complaints with their packing. The truck driver kept talking about how it looked like the pallet was overkill. The pallet was listed at a weight of 180lbs and surprising easy to handle. Of course, we just slid it from the trailer into my truck and then I slid it from the truck to the driveway, LOL.
I have to admit that prior to ordering I had emailed requesting the weight capacities on this bench since I hadn’t seen any listed. Once seeing this in person, I am now embarrassed that I asked. It certainly is built like a tank. The adjustments are easy with a pull pin for the seat back and another for the seat. The leg rest/handle also has a pull pin but just for removal. It was actually shipped not attached and wrapped securely in several layers of bubble wrap inside of crate. The first thing I noticed is after getting on it is the foam. Very rigid which is a great change from my old York I am replacing. Next there is absolutely no wobble. I purchased my York bench about 15 years ago and I guess had just gotten used to the lateral movement when getting in position and frequently feeling the edges of the backboard of the seat when laying on it. Never knew what I was missing until now.
Goes from 1 decline setting to nearly full 90 and several stops in between. Of course those in between stop are going to take some getting used to. Today was a chest, shldr, tri day and I had waiting to workout until this arrived. My York was basically flat, 45, or 90. I started my incline work at I believe 60 instead of the 45 I was used and definitely made a difference. Going to have fun see how the different angles are going to change my workouts. And again I can’t begin to tell you how solid this thing is. Just recently getting back into this I’m certainly not moving any massive weights, but I would be surprised to ever reach a point where I would actually challenge this bench. One thing I’m going to have to get used to though is the length of the seat back. Especially in incline I feel the top of my head at the end of the bench. I’m 6’3″ and would prefer the length to be about another 2 to 3 inches, but figure I’ll eventually get adjusted to it and won’t notice it at all. The width of the bench is just slightly more narrow than the York I’ve been using and actually feels better but again I’m sure there will be an adjustment curve for a few sessions due to the change.
The wheels are very smooth and makes moving around really a breeze. I’m sure having to actually lug this beast around would get old after a while, the wheels definitely take care of that.
I certainly have no complaints or regrets about the purchase. Actually looking forward to hopefully upgrading my CL Bodysolid rack to a Legend Louie Simmons at some point.

Guest Review of Body Solid Kettlebell
Mar 23rd
The following review was used by permission of Gary Ohm. The original review appeared on the CrossFit Message boards and can be located at http://www.board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=56578
Here is a review of some kettlebells I recently purchased from Christian’s Fitness Factory. First the standard disclaimer; I have nothing to do with CFF except that I am a fan..
I bought two 70# body solid kettlebells. I had recently bought another 80# bell from another company and I was looking for something to attack myself from a different angle. When I first talked to Noah about them, he said that they were not a big seller because the handles were too thick for most people. I thought “yeah, yeah, yeah… big handle, hard on the grip… blah, blah, I taught John Brookfield everything he knows, yada, yada, yada…”
Whelp… These handles are HUGE!!! The finish is also smooth. On my dragon door reds I sanded the paint off to get down to the bare metal because I did not like the smooth finish. I don’t know what the technical difference is, but I have no intention of sanding these down. This finish is far better than that of the dragon door reds.
I am using these, and they are a tremendous workout on the hands and grip and forearm. These kettlebells are going to be the mainstay of any grip work that I do.
I have been using them in a kettlebell complex that seems to be working well for me. I do ten minutes of getups/windmills with my 53’s, then 10 minutes of alternate hand swings with these 70# body solids, then 10 minutes of long cycle clean and press with the 53’s, and then ten minutes of alternating hand high pulls with my Troy 80#.
This combination works just about everything to the limit.
I would highly recommend Christians Fitness Factory and these Body Solid kettlebells if you want a thick handled kettlebell to REALLY work your hands. The finish is better than dragondoor in my opinion and they are very well made and are a fraction of the price of dd’s. These body solids “only” go up to 75 pounds… If you can snatch or work doubles with more than that on these body solids, I want an autographed picture…
Noah was concerned with the shipping on these. With bells this heavy they sometimes arrived dinged up. Noah went way out of his way and arranged to have them shipped directly from the big warehouse professionally packed. They arrived VERY fast, ding free, and with no extra handling charges. Noah took very personal care of me.
Bottom line on these body solid kettlebells is that they are AWESOME!
Side note: I really have never met John Brookfield and I have nothing but respect for the guy. He is one of my grip strength guru’s. What I wrote above was meant as a joke…
Discounts: Who and Why
Mar 19th
We are often asked if we will give discounts or throw in some free equipment when an order is placed. Hey why not? We all want to get a great deal when buy equipment. The thing that really set Christian’s Fitness Factory apart is that our goal is and always will be to provide every single customer with the very best price possible the first time. We believe that if we can provide you with the best possible equipment at the best possible prices then everyone wins. You will never find us price matching. We already give the absolute lowest price we can and survive. If a company can beat our price then why didn’t they give that price to you up front? You get the honest price the first time from Christian’s Fitness Factory. Oh and if the other guy can beat our price then we applaud them and actually encourage you to purchase from them. We are in this for you, and by all means if they have a better price good on you!
With that being said we do offer a 7% discount to a select group of people. Some people laugh at 7% as being ridiculous. The thing is that when we give this discount we have calculated what we can give and then still pay our expenses. As I said before we give you the customer the best price up front. Our reasoning behind the discount to these individuals and groups is such: If its for a LEO, fire fighter, militar etc, these men and woman sacrifice daily to keep us safe. If we can contribute to keeping them healthy the we want to do so and its our way of saying thank you for their service. For schools, lets face it we all know that the schools are suffering and the kids are our future customers. For gyms and affiliates, these are the people that are buying the quantities that allow us to get the prices we get so we can pass them on to you. The following is our Discount Policy as taken from our web site:
We extend a professional courtesy discount of 7% off the cost of equipment to the following:
Professional Firefighters
Law Enforcement Personnel
Military (including retired)
CrossFit Affiliates
Commercial Gyms
Schools and Universities
Rehab Facilities
Hotels
Certain restrictions apply. Discounts can not be extended on certain items including but not limited to Concept2 Rowers, items on special and used equipment. Discount is taken before shipping costs. For military, law enforcement, and firefighters we require proof of service (military id, police id, etc). Discounts will be applied after the order is placed and proof is received. For business discounts we require that the orders be shipped to the place of business. In some instances, especially with CrossFit Boxes, we understand that someone can not always be at the location and other shipping can be arranged, we just ask that you please speak with us regarding this. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
We hope this makes sense and we appreciate each and every one of you as our customers and our friends.
14″ Medicine Balls
Mar 17th
The Dynamax 14″ diameter medicine ball and CrossFit. It was like a match made in heaven. The perfect medicine ball for doing sport specific training; with a large diameter and soft shell the Dynamax ball allowed for high velocity movements without worrying about bashing in your face. CrossFit couples high intensity, full body, movements designed to move as much weight as possible as far as possible as fast as possible. Merge the two and you have wall ball. The monster exercise that causes strong men to wilt into puddles of sweat and tears. The 20 lb Dynamax ball presented the perfect tool for taxing the whole body physically and mentally, but it was destined to be more like a Hollywood marriage then a long term relationship.
